Midwest Women Chemists Retreat

The ACS Ames Local Section is supporting the 2018 Midwest Women Chemists Retreat. This event is an excellent opportunity for graduate students and postdocs to grow professionally and to develop strategies to address challenges that especially impact women in scientific careers. The retreat will be held Fri.-Sun., July 27-29, in Decorah, IA, and 50 attendees from Ph.D. granting programs across the midwest are anticipated.

Ames local section of American Chemical Society is celebrating one hundred years anniversary of the local section establishment. Local section councilor report

Newly elected, three-year councilor Javier Vela from ISU, and alternate councilor Maria Bohorquez from Drake, will regularly attend ACS national meetings to represent the Ames Local section. As per national ACS policies, the local section co-sponsors the councilor's travel to national meetings. Because many of the members do not attend the national meeting, the councilor will share the national ACS news with the local members.

AACT membership support for high school chemistry teachers

To promote professional development of local high school chemistry teachers, we will support their AACT (American Associate of Chemistry Teachers) membership ($50/year) for the first year. Below is the details.

* She or he should be a high school chemistry teacher of the school district within the limit of Ames Local section.

* We support only the first year membership. You should pay yourself and send us the receipt (email is fine), then we will send you the reimbursement.

Mini-grant program

Thanks to the healthy budget of the Ames local section, we have some funds available we would like to use to promote public awareness of chemistry in the local area. Here's some guidelines:


a. Deadline: There will be two deadlines per year: Jun 1st and Jan 1st. This is intentional to meet with the deadlines of ACS innovative project grants, that are due Jun 30th and Jan 31st, so that we may get some money back from ACS or provide more fund through ACS.
